Originally from Rome Italy, Montella has developed an individual musical style which combines Traditional American Folk, blues, ragtime and bluegrass into his focus on jazz.

Part of the Italian music scene for years Montella performed with numerous groups renging from Italian jazz players like Francesco Forti, Roberto Trillo', Marcello Rosa, Luigi Toth to American artists such as Mike Seeger, Guy Carawan, Hazel Dickens, Lyon Everett and many others.

In addition to his participation in a array of music festivals, Montella has also taught a variety of guitar styles both at home and in music schools and held several seminars on Popular American music. He continues with the private lessons he has offered in Italy and in the USA for the past 35 years, which are also available on CD.

He teaches the following guitar styles:

Finger-picking—From Mississippi J. Hurt to Leo Kottke, Merle Travis to Big Bill Broonzy, Gary Davies and Blind Blake. You name it and he will teach you.

Flat-picking—From classic folk style to Clarenca White, Doc Watson to Dan Crary or Tony Rice.

Jazz—Now you will understand and play all those strange chords & scales and throw away all those useless tapes and books that you collected in the past years. You will play Dixieland, Classic & Modern Jazz.

Five-String Banjo—Get to know Freeling style banjo, Clawhammer, Bluegrass (Melodic and Classic)and Tenor banjo

Mandolin—You will learn Classic Mandolin, Bluegrass and Italian style Electric Bass

Tonino Montella plays with his group featuring Larry McKenna on Sax, Sy Platt on trumpet and Joe Kearney on Bass every Sunday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Jazz Brunch in the Swann Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia.

As part of the Media Jazz Festival, Sat, October 18, 7:30 pm, Tonino will be a soloist at Margaret Kuo's in Media. 4-6 W. State Street, Media, PA.
